Culture vultures on long-term visits to the country will find a vibrant artistic and entertainment scene in Dhaka. The website www.somewhereindhaka.net provides excellent up-to-date listings on some events in the city, including stage, film and food events. However, the great majority of other events are so poorly advertised that it often takes a detective mindset to figure out when and where to go. The best way is to ask around and figure out who’s knowledgeable first. Then, once you discover who actually knows what they’re talking about, you can follow their suggestions for what to do. Many of Dhaka’s artistic organisations and galleries maintain in-house email lists broadcasting their events, but you must first get your email address on their list in order to get advance notice.

Getting up to speed on events in the expatriate scene is a similarly manual process: you visit the clubs and read the bulletin boards yourself for the latest information. These bulletin boards also feature classified ads, job postings for local help and flat availability.
