Ekushey (21 February)

In the early days of the newly formed Pakistan, its government was quick to declare that ‘Urdu and only Urdu’ would be the national language of the new Muslim nation. This mistake gave the eastern wing of the country the fuel it needed to fan the flames of independence, which helped lead to the birth of Bangladesh. Known as International Mother Language Day, Ekushey marks the death of the first martyrs of Bangladesh. On 21 February 1952, five students were gunned down during language protests at Dhaka University by the police. The event is widely recognised as the seed that eventually culminated in Bangladesh’s independence. On this day a large procession moves through the city towards Shaheed Minar, the Dhaka University memorial to these early martyrs.
